ABOUT

Jon Cazenave (b. San Sebastián, 1978) builds his photographic practice around the conflict between nature and culture as a kind of rhizome that has grown and expanded over the years. In his early work, he explored themes such as identity and memory, with the landscape as an ever-present backdrop. What began as a documentary approach has evolved into a dynamic relationship with the landscape – he intervenes in the medium that represents it or acts directly on the materials that inhabit it, using techniques such as cyanotype, Risograph printing, photogravure and screen printing.

He has exhibited his work in both public and private institutions such as: Guangdong Museum of Art (China), Museum Belvédère (Netherlands), Royal Academy of Spain in Rome (Italy), Fotomuseum Antwerp (Belgium), MUNTREF Museum of Visual Arts (Argentina), Carpintarias de São Lázaro (Lisbon), Canal de Isabel II Exhibition Hall (Spain), CaixaForum (Spain), Círculo de Bellas Artes (Spain), Royal Botanical Garden (Spain), Tabakalera (Spain), CentroCentro Palacio de Cibeles (Spain), and Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation (Spain). He has participated in a number of international events, including: Les Rencontres de la Photographie d´Arles (France), Noorderlicht Photofestival (Netherlands), Guangzhou Image Triennial (China), BienalSUR (Argentina), Foto México (Mexico), and Photoespaña (Spain).

His work has been recognised in art competitions such as: Royal Academy of Spain in Rome Grant, FOAM Paul Huf Award, FotoPres La Caixa Grant, Basque Government Fine Arts Grant, Enate Artistic Residency grant, Arts Libris Prize, Tokyo International Photography Award, Descubrimientos Photoespaña, PDN Award, and Santa María de Albarracín Foundation Photography Grant.

Some of his works and publications belong to the collections of del CA2M, Centro Nacional de Fotografía (Ministry of Culture), AECID (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), MACBA, Kutxa Foundation and other private collections.

PROJECT

Galerna

DESCRIPTION

Throughout Galerna, one gets the sense of Cazenave trying to unlearn his natural desire to understand where he comes from and more importantly, he is trying to unlearn how to communicate it to others. That is not to suggest that the artist has not achieved what he started out to do in speaking around the Basque Country, but he has extended the possibility of approximation by decisively thinking through atmosphere and affect allowing the images to suggest and not tell or describe. The images resonate with very little outside knowledge of the place and yet, you cannot read the images as what is, but rather what could be. This makes the artist’s suggestions all that more powerful.
