Galerna es un proyecto fotográfico de largo recorrido en el que Jon Cazenave, nacido en San Sebastián en 1978, cuestiona su identidad y su pertenencia a un territorio. Más allá de documentar un lugar, este largo viaje fotográfico le conduce hacia el descubrimiento de su más profundo ser.
Sus primeras imágenes vienen marcadas por la realidad política de su tierra, pero muy pronto le sobreviene otra necesidad, que es la de descubrir el alma de su territorio y la de sus orígenes. Poco a poco se va distanciando del enfoque documental para dirigirse hacia otro lenguaje fotográfico más esencial. Se apega así a su entorno cercano: la montaña, el bosque, el mar y sus pescadores, la cultura vasca y sus ritos, también el animal y, más tarde, las cuevas con las que se fusiona. Llegan las imágenes negras, puras, directas, talladas en la materia. Jon Cazenave hace una incisión en el paisaje, su propio paisaje.
Después de más de diez años de fotografía apasionada, sin concesiones, percibe una dirección diferente y se libera de su insaciable sed de negro. El color aporta una nueva respuesta a su búsqueda, y termina así su largo recorrido en el vacío del universo, abriendo la puerta a nuevas formas de crear.
Este libro, tan sencillo como contundente, consigue a través de la edición trasladar la experiencia tanto física como emocional de un viaje, primero hacia los orígenes y después hacia el lugar desde el que el fotógrafo divisa la libertad. El libro incluye una narración del escritor Kirmen Uribe en la que examina los fundamentos lingüísticos del euskera, así como sus resonancias etnográficas y antropológicas, y un texto de Fannie Escoulen, comisaria, que permite comprender la búsqueda fotográfica de Jon Cazenave.

Galerna is a long-running photography project in which Jon Cazenave, born in San Sebastián (Spain) in 1978, questions his identity and his territorial belonging. Beyond documenting a place, this extensive photographic journey leads him to the discovery of his deepest being.
His early pictures are marked by the political situation in his homeland, but soon enough another urge arises: the need to discover the spirit of his region and his origins. He slowly drifts away from the documentary approach towards a more essential photographic language, devoting himself to his surroundings: the mountains, the woodlands, the sea and its fishermen, the Basque culture and its rituals; also, the wildlife and, more recently, the caves that it merges with. Thus are born his black, pure, direct images, carved out of matter. Jon Cazenave makes an incision in the landscape, his own landscape.
After over a decade of passionate, uncompromising photography, he senses a different direction and shakes off his insatiable thirst for black. Colour offers a new answer to his search, putting an end to his long journey through the emptiness of the universe and opening the door to new forms of creation.
As simple as it is conclusive, this book manages, through editing, to evoke the physical and emotional experience of a journey, first to the origins and then to the place from which the photographer perceives freedom. This volume includes an essay by the writer Kirmen Uribe that examines the linguistic foundations of the Basque, as well as its ethnographic and anthropological resonances. The text by Fannie Escoulen, curator, allows us to understand Jon Cazenave's photographic search.
